The new staging of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte by Phelim McDermott played live last Saturday at Carib 5 and may be seen again this Sunday, 11:30 a.m. at Palace Cineplex. The opulent production evokes Coney Island in the 1950s, with a troupe of carnival performers backing a cast that includes the radiant Tony Award winner Kelli O'Hara, who sings in Italian the role of Despina. The opera takes on a fascinating paradox: a comedy of manners with an intensely dark take on human nature; an old story with a startlingly modern tone; and a beautiful score depicting questionable behaviour. Composed in 1789 and first performed in Vienna on January 26, 1790, Cosi fan tutte, (The School for Lovers or Thus do they all) has also been called Mozart's most perfect opera. The winning cast also includes Amanda Majeski, Serena Malfi, Ben Bliss, and Adam Plachetka as the pairs of young lovers who test each other's faithfulness. David Robertson conducts.
