Yulit Gordon, executive director of the Jamaica Cancer Society, believes that if every Jamaican donated $100 to the work of the organisation, its target to fund operations for the next two years would be achieved.

Gordon, in a passionate plea yesterday to citizens at the Society's Relay for Life launch, indicated that the organisation required a great deal of resources to fulfil its mandate and was urging every Jamaican to play a part in achieving the target of $15 million.

"There is a lot riding on the success of Relay for Life, which is our single largest fundraiser. If this event fails, the successful delivery of our goals and objectives becomes a challenge for the organisation," she told the gathering during the press launch of the event at The Terra Nova Hotel in St Andrew.

Relay For Life is scheduled for June 2-3 at the front playfield at the University of Technology (UTECH).

"The maintenance of our medical facility requires significant capital outlay. All our services are significantly subsidised to allow for greater access by those without health insurance," she continued

Gordon added, "As a policy, the Jamaica Cancer Society does not turn away anyone who does not have the minimum contribution requested. Through its community outreach, over 100 communities are provided with Pap smears, mammograms, and prostate checks."

Chairman of the Jamaica Cancer Society, Earl Jarrett, made a similar plea and sought to reassure patients and family members that the society would continue to give support where needed.

NOTE: An earlier version of this story had incorrectly stated the dates for Relay for Life. The correct dates are June 2-3.
