Growth & Jobs | 'Amaze them' - Entertainment about bringing customers back for more, says Lee
An intent focus on repeat customers is a major factor Julianne Lee, director of Jamaica Carnival, believes is necessary for promoters in the entertainment industry to have great success.
"Entertainment is about making sure that the patron has such an amazing time that they have to return. When I think of my father (Byron Lee), Daddy believed very much in the repeat customer, not the bottom line," Lee told The Gleaner in a discussion on the business side of entertainment.
"Persons in the industry have to make sure that they never short-change. Always make sure you cross all the T's, because it is the repeat customer that you are looking for."
The director said, too, that she was impressed with the level of seriousness that young promoters display. This, she thinks, augurs well for growth and development of the industry.
"Today, I do think there are a lot of promoters out there who are taking this thing seriously. When we look back 10 years ago, people did not see promotion as serious business. A man who owned a sound company and spent millions of dollars on gear and generators, persons did not see the significant investment," Lee said.
"The balance in entertainment is missing, however, and the entertainment industry should be held to a higher standard. We see a lot of progress, but is it progress for the country, or is it just for those involved? I think the net needs to be widened to get more persons involved."
Despite the progress, she pointed to the gender imbalance in the industry, noting that more women are needed. Lee also encouraged young persons to make sure that they enter the fraternity for the right reasons and push through despite the challenges.
"I don't see a lot of women in the industry because I think it is still a man's world. Even though you have women, you are only allowed to go so far.
"I am in awe of the younger generation. Go for it, but you remember that you have to push through the challenges. These are the layers that make you wiser and stronger. Have the ability to look beyond the public relations and the hype, and look for the core essence. Keep your head down, and focus on the end result because it is not about self-glory," she declared.
