Sotomayor, Hilly's Halo too hot to handle
SOTOMAYOR and HILLY'S HALO easily won their respective divisions of yesterday's overnight allowance Purewater Trophy co-feature at seven furlongs.
Short-priced favourites, both horses won similarly, taking charge from three furlongs out and outclassing rivals.
SOTOMAYOR, the second of three winners for Panamanian Dick Cardenas, disputed the lead with 19-1 outsider OLD BRAETON before moving away to win by three and a half lengths at odds of 3-5, clocking 1:25.4 minutes.
United States-bred HILLY'S HALO was particularly impressive, winning Division Two in 1:24.0 minutes, her fourth consecutive victory from nine starts, one of two winners for non-claiming apprentice Dane Dawkins, who returned to boot home KD FLYER at odds of 7-1 in the ninth.
Cardenas was the day's leading rider, opening the 10-race card with A SEH SOUP at 7-2 before closing his three-timer with SOTOMAYOR and 2-1 chance HONEY RYDA in a driving finish over 3-5 favourite OUTRAGEOUS TAJ in the fifth.
The Panamanian enjoyed a good weekend, five winners, after posting a two-timer on Saturday, which takes him well clear of Shane Ellis for second place in the jockeys' standings, 23 behind leading rider, apprentice Anthony Thomas.
Yesterday's meet closed out eights days of racing in August, with the next card scheduled for Saturday, September 1.
