BMW calms local jitters

AS BMW joins the ever-expanding brands of recalled vehicles, local dealers, Stewart Motors, have said it has identified six vehicles with similar problems to those pulled off the market in the United States (US).

"Six have come up on our radar. And, of that number, three have already been repaired," said Kim Bernard, sales and marketing executive at the Orchard Road-based dealership. "We are now making arrangements for the others to come in."

Last week, The Associated Press reported that the Germany automaker issued a recall of 150,000 luxury vehicles in the US to fix faulty fuel pumps that could cause vehicles to lose power.

According to the report, the vehicles identified include: 2007-2010 335i; 2008-2010 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Coupe and 2009-2010 Z4 Roadster sDrive35i.

The parent company said a software update or a replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump could solve the hiccup. So far, there have been no reports of deaths or injury.

Locally, the X5 - equipped with normal aspirated in-line six-cylinder engines - is the only model which has been added to the US list.

Duncan Stewart, Stewart Motors' general manager, said his company was advised of the glitch prior to the US announcement.

"We were advised way before the US recall became public," he said. "And, the Jamaican campaign is significantly less far-reaching than the American one."

But, will this recall affect future sales?

"Up to September of this year, BMW enjoyed 75 per cent of market share ... over Audi and Mercedes-Benz," he said.

The second-generation businessman said clients with BMW vehicles which had faulty pumps would not be charged for repairs done by Stewart Motors.

"When BMW [the parent company] issues a technical campaign, there is no charge to the car owners," he said.

Stewart encouraged clients with queries to call his company's service centre.

"They can be assured we'll look after them well," he added.
