Jamaican man dies after being struck by moped driver in Queens
A 68-year-old Jamaica-born man was struck and killed by a moped while standing on the street in a section of Queens, New York, in the United States on Friday.
Dead is former corrections officer Trevor Lloyd Samuels, who was in the marked crosswalk when he was struck by the moped at East 93rd Avenue and 168th Street. The incident occurred just days before Samuels was reportedly scheduled to travel to Jamaica today.
Samuels was planning to take his young daughter with him from Jamaica to New York to celebrate the upcoming Christmas holidays.
It is reported that he suffered a head injury during the incident. Reports are that the moped was travelling the wrong way.
According to the police, the 26-year-old driver of the moped, Yunio Buleje Rodriquez, remained at the scene until law enforcement arrived.
He has been charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, but the investigation is ongoing, according to the police.
Samuels reportedly moved to New York some 20 years ago after serving for decades as a corrections officer in Jamaica.
The father and grandfather has been described as a beloved patriarch of the family.
His eldest daughter, Kievette Samuels, told media outlets that when she heard the knock at the door of the family house, she wondered why he would be knocking as he had his keys.
According to a report in the New York Post, she said the police arrived with news that shattered her world.
The family described Samuels as a hard-working family man who built a life in the US after arriving from Jamaica. He most recently worked as a home health aide.
In a condolence tribute posted on social media, the family said he dedicated his life to providing service to others.
“Trevor was a proud Jamaican whose life was defined by service, resilience, and love for his family. As a retired corrections officer, he dedicated many years to protecting and serving, earning the respect of colleagues and the admiration of those who knew him. His professional life reflected his discipline and commitment, while his personal life was filled with warmth, wisdom and devotion,” the family said in the social media post.
They said he cherished his role as a father and grandfather, and his presence was a highlight at family gatherings.
