Should embassies be allowed to display anything they want?
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I am inspired to write this letter as I take offence to the blatant disregard for a nation’s laws and sensibilities with the US government defiantly displaying the rainbow flag for all to see beside the US flag. I thought to myself, is this really acceptable? Two thoughts came to my mind.
1. Would it be acceptable for the Jamaican embassy to hoist a flag with an image of Jesus dying on the cross beside the Jamaican flag in the US?
2. What’s next? What happens if they decide to hoist the Ku Klux Klan flag?
Are we expected to just accept anything any embassy is willing to infest our space with, simply because they control the space?
Words and images are the most powerful force known to mankind. By His Word, God created the heavens and the earth. Words have built nations and words have brought their destruction. The display of the rainbow flag or any other imagery that undermines a country’s laws is the equivalent of starting a revolution in a nation – which is evidently the intent of this public display.
If the raising of this flag in US embassies throughout the world is a mandate by the Joe Biden administration, then I suggest that the ambassador, in order not to defy the order, fly it at half mast only and out of sight of the Jamaican public at large.
That way it will only be seen by those entering their premises and not contaminate the minds of the Jamaican people and their children.
