Why no live coverage of netball?

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Much has been written about gender issues, from violence against women, the opening of a gender-based violence centre, to closing the gender pay gap. There is even a ministry and minister with responsibility for gender affairs. This all bodes well for our country, but I beg to introduce an area of gender concern that appears to be missing from the discussion.

Gender equity in TV sports coverage has never been an issue of national debate, and it’s time for it to be moved to the front page. My primary concern is with the absence of live coverage of netball. Arguably, netball

has been Jamaica’s number one team sport for some time. As of September 2025, the Sunshine Girls are ranked third in the world. As a start, I beg that marquee match-ups in our senior and high school leagues be afforded live TV coverage. I would hope that either TVJ, TVJ Sports, CVM, or Flow Sports would do the right thing and elevate local netball to our television screens.
