Fire at the Grand Bahia Principe Hotel in Runaway Bay, St Ann, yesterday morning resulted in approximately J$15 million in damages, says the St Ann Fire Department. No one was injured.

A spokesperson at the department said a call came in at 2:28 a.m. informing them of a fire at the hotel. Three units from Brown's Town and St Ann's Bay responded to put out the blaze, which was confined to the roof of a section of one of the towers at the hotel.

Brought under control

The fire was brought under control just after 4:15 a.m.

The damaged area is said to have been used as storage for several items, including chemicals. The Fire Department has commenced investigations into the cause of the fire. Grand Bahia Principe is one of the largest hotels in Jamaica.

In 2016, the Spanish-based Bahia brand, which also has hotels in Dominican Republic and Mexico, won the award for Best Tourism Company in the Caribbean, presented by British company, Cristal International Standards.
