FOR ALMOST a century, at 99 years old, Pastor Howard Holmes has lived a life defined by unwavering faith, exemplary service and a resolute commitment to ministry, igniting a spiritual legacy which has touched lives across generations and borders.

“I believe in Christian education, I felt challenged to be faithful and obey the instructions of God. There is nothing that I have accomplished that I have not put God first,” Pastor Holmes shared after being recognised as a Product Sample by Northern Caribbean University (NCU) at its 102nd commencement ceremony on August 10 in Mandeville.

“It is important to adhere to Christian principles and I always encourage people to be faithful and stay in hope to God,” he noted.

Pastor Holmes began his journey in the tranquil district of Darlington, Westmoreland, and accepted the Adventist faith at 17 years old. He remains a beacon of grace and wisdom, having spent 82 years passionately sharing the gospel, blending faith with education and impacting the formation of young minds.

“As a Seventh-day Adventist I learnt early about adherence to the requirements of the scripture, including health principles as given in the Bible – exercise, eating properly and getting adequate rest,” Pastor Holmes said.

He enrolled at the then West Indies Training College where he graduated in 1957. He later returned to earn his bachelor of theology degree, equipping himself for pastoral service. Holmes’ professional ministry began at the East Jamaica Conference, where he served a both a pastor and chaplain to Adventist youth at The University of the West Indies.

His ministry extended beyond Jamaica through his service with the Cayman Islands Mission as Sabbath School and Lay Activities Director. He continued his service at the Central Jamaica Conference, holding several leadership roles including publishing and temperance director, where he championed holistic living and literature ministry.

By awarding Pastor Holmes the position of Product Sample, NCU recognised him as a true ambassador of Adventist education and spiritual leadership that continues to transform lives. “I am deeply honoured and grateful to receive this award. Thank you for recognising my efforts,” he said.

Pastor Holmes was the familiar voice on Love 101 FM’s ‘Morning Manna’ and through this morning devotional he offered counsel, hope and healing to couples and families, always anchored in Christian principles.

In addition to his public ministry, Pastor Holmes is a devoted family man. He has been married for 60 years to Ivy Creary, and together they have raised three children.

Though officially retired, he continues to serve as spiritual counsel, and as a haven for those seeking prayer and encouragement.

“I was called to serve, and I wanted to ensure that I did my best for the greater glory of God. It wasn’t easy, but with the support of my family and the church, I am still here today. I am not as active as before, but I still give back in whatever way that I can,” Pastor Holmes said.
