Eyes are being set for a return to rafting on the Martha Brae River in Falmouth, Trelawny following displacement caused by Hurricane Melissa.

Businessman Johnny Gourzong, the owner of River Raft Limited, which operates the Rafting on the Martha Brae attraction, the company suffered losses as a result of the Category 5 storm.

“We had scaled down operations just prior to the hurricane. Since then, only in the last two weeks have we been able to access the property. The river and the roadway had become one,” Gourzong explained.

He added that clearing operations are now under way, and rafting is expected to resume soon.

“There is good and bad from the hurricane. We have lost earnings and have to be paying to clean the river. However, unlike [Hurricane] Beryl, we lost no raft, so once the river is clear then we are ready to go,” Gurzong said.

Despite the setbacks, the company is optimistic that operations will return to normal in the near future.
