A 55-year-old security officer was charged on Tuesday in connection with the alleged theft of more than $2 million from an automated teller machine (ATM) at a financial institution in St Andrew.
Terrance Austin is charged with larceny as a servant.
The police report that a financial institution discovered discrepancies on Friday, May 29, involving cash that had reportedly not been received since January 29.
The institution subsequently alerted representatives of the contracted security company responsible for servicing the ATM and cheque deposit vault.
An internal probe allegedly revealed that Austin, who was employed by the security company and assigned to clear the ATM and cheque deposit vault, removed $2,045,300 from the machine.
According to the police, the alleged theft was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed inside the ATM area.
The matter was reported to the police on June 11, prompting further investigations by detectives assigned to the St Andrew Central Division.
Austin was arrested and later charged after reportedly giving a caution statement in the presence of his attorney.
His court date is being finalised.
