The police have charged a 24-year-old man for allegedly setting his ex-girlfriend’s house on fire in Jones Town, St Andrew, and locking the woman and other occupants inside the dwelling.

Charged with arson is construction worker Neish Ramdas, otherwise called ‘Nish’, of Luke Lane, Kingston.

The alleged incident happened on Monday, October 12.

According to reports from the Denham Town police, at approximately 2:15 a.m., a woman was at home with family members when she reportedly received a call from her ex-boyfriend, Ramdas, threatening to burn down the house.

According to the police, shortly afterwards, she reportedly smelled gasoline and noticed smoke coming from beneath a door before discovering that the front section of the house was on fire.

The police say that when the occupants attempted to escape, they found the door bolted from the outside.

They managed to break a glass window and escape through it, the police reported.

According to the police, the woman reportedly saw Ramdas fleeing the yard on foot.

With the assistance of residents, the family managed to extinguish the blaze.

Ramdas was later apprehended and charged based on statements recorded implicating him.

His court date is being finalised.
