The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) will be introducing monthly bulky waste collection in Norwood, St James, says the agency’s Executive Director, Audley Gordon.

Speaking to journalists during a recent clean-up activity at a garbage holding area in the community, he said that the exercise is part of measures to tackle illegal dumping in the community.

“So, one of the things that we are going to be doing is a monthly bulky waste cleanup because a lot of what is here is bulky although you do see some regular domestic garbage, but you see old car parts, old fridge, old stove etc,” he pointed out.

Gordon said that the initiative is in addition to regular garbage collection in the area and will provide residents with a more organised system to dispose of large items.

He noted that the monthly exercise in Norwood will serve as a “test case”, noting that bulky waste removal will be conducted on a quarterly basis in other areas.

The NSWMA head further stated that there are plans to engage the community in protecting areas being used as illegal dumpsites.

He underscored that citizens have a crucial role to play in discouraging persons, especially those from outside the area, from using illegal dumpsites in the community.

“So, we have to take care of Norwood, and then Norwood will become our main partner as we try to police this area,” he stated.

Gordon said that political representatives for the area will be engaged in discussions regarding improving a section of the community, which has become an illegal dumpsite, through landscaping and beautification.

“For example, this strip here [ garbage holding area] would look so beautiful were we to put some palms and some flowers and stuff like that, maybe two benches where people can sit down,” he said.

He pointed out that the location is not an authorised disposal site despite being used for that purpose, noting that the agency aims to halt all dumping there completely.
