Spot Valley's Wilson is one for the future
Coach of Spot Valley High School, Gregory Palmer, expects 14-year-old prodigy Notoneil Wilson to be one of his team's stars in this season's ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup competition.
Wilson created a number of problems for the opposing defence as Spot Valley defeated hosts Herbert Morrison Technical 1-0 yesterday.
Substitute Travoy Vassell got the lone goal in the 53rd minute as Spot Valley scored their second consecutive win.
“Well basically, he (Wilson) is a very technical player we just have to teach him when to dribble when to pass and when to move the ball. He plays very well to instructions and has a brilliant football mind. I have said to him that a player in the No. 10 role must see as many as three passes before the ball comes to him and trust me he has it,” said Palmer.
“He started and scored in the first game. He felt a little niggle in training (Wednesday) so we didn’t want to put him at risk out there today. We had to do some medical work on him to try and get him fit for the game,” he added.
Despite Wilson’s age and size, Palmer believes he will be a key man for them if they are to go deep into the competition this year.
“He has the ability to play that defence-splitting pass but as I said we have to teach him, when and how. We also have to work with the team as well because if the team does not have that chemistry he won’t be effective,” said Palmer.
“We started the programme very late this season ... so it’s still a work in progress. This is the Under-16 team which has now come up to this senior level and we are trying to do our best to qualify for the next round,” he added.
Spot Valley have made their presence felt in the daCosta Cup in recent seasons by getting to the quarter-final stage in the past two years. Palmer who is also the dean of discipline at the school said they have something going for them and they are looking to keep improving.
“It’s a lot of fun working with these guys because they are willing to learn," said Palmer.
