ISSA gets approval for Champs
The Government has given ISSA approval on Friday for the staging of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships (Champs).
ISSA President Keith Wellington welcomes the news and says it allows the body to move forward with planning what he hopes will be a safe and successful event.
"Earlier today, we were verbally informed by ODPEM (Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management) that the Government has given us the green light to stage the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships between May 11 and 15," Wellington told The Gleaner.
Champs was initially set for March 23-27 but a spike in COVID-19 cases saw a tightening of movement across the island by the Government, pushing back the date provisionally for April.
But further tightening of curfews then forced ISSA to consider rescheduling the five-day event once more.
The meet will be the first held since 2019 as last year's staging was cancelled by ISSA just a day after the first officially recognised case in the island.
Stakeholders are now waiting to hear the structure of this year's meet as it is being proposed that it be scaled down just Class One or Class One and Two to accommodate athletes seeking scholarships for tertiary education, and also to better allow social distancing.
