Volcanoes, Richardson part ways

Former Jamaica fast bowler, now coach, Andrew Richardson has been relieved of his duties as coach of the Windward Island Volcanoes.

Windward Islands Chief Executive Officer Dwain Gill says Richardson, who took over the head coaching role from Andre Coley in October of 2019, was not offered a new contract.

The former Jamaica Scorpions assistant coach was awaiting a response from the franchise as his two-year contract was to be renewed on June 30.

“I just got a phone call, followed by an email, to say that my contract won’t be renewed, and I didn’t ask any questions whatsoever. That’s it,” Richardson said. “It was a good experience, and there is no ill will or hard feelings, and you just have to go and work somewhere else.”

The Gleaner understands that the Windwards Volcanoes have appointed former Barbados cricketer Shirley Clarke as his replacement.

Richardson says he is thankful for the experience of working with the Windwards franchise, which performed creditably over the last two seasons in both the Regional Super 50 Cup and the Four-Day competition.

“I got to work with some good players who improved and made the transition to the West Indies set-up,” he said. “Unfortunately, we did not win any trophies, but we had good runs in the Super 50 Cup. In four-day cricket, I don’t have a losing record, so I will leave it at that.”

Richardson is set to continue his role as manager of the Barbados Tridents franchise in this year’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) set for August.

The former Kingston College and Kingston Cricket club player says he will be weighing his options and will make a decision after the CPL.
