After losing all three meetings against Dunbeholden in the 2018-19 Jamaica Premier League season, Portmore United head coach Ricardo Gardner is pleased to have started the new season with a win over their St Catherine derby rival.

Portmore, with a goal in either half from Ricardo Morris and Emelio Rousseau, scored a comfortable 2-0 win over their St Catherine rivals.

Morris fired Portmore into the lead after 34 minutes played, and Rousseau sealed the win with a vicious strike from 35 yards, 15 minutes from time.

Gardner said Dunbeholden were better in their head-to-head meetings last time, but they have put that behind them and are ready to chart a new path forward this season.

“It is always a good feeling to get a win under your belt, especially in the first game of the season,” Gardner told The Gleaner. “This will lift the players and help them to grow in confidence and help them to believe in what we are doing.

“Every game is important, and we cannot just focus on one team. But this game is now out of the way, so now we have to refocus and gather ourselves for next week.

“We will sit and look at the things we have done good today and continue to do them going forward. The things that we haven’t done so well, we must continue to improve those functions.

“Our end product can do a little bit more as well as in the wide areas and keeping the ball a little longer. But when we go out [again], we will try to get it right.”
