National forward Romario Williams will have a new home this coming season as the latest member of United Soccer League (USL) championship side Colorado Springs Switchbacks.

The deal was made official on Thursday, pending league and federation approval, after a six-month stint with New Mexico United last season dating back to last July. In the short time that he spent with New Mexico, he scored one goal in 10 appearances for the club. This will be Williams’ sixth club in the last five years, after previously spending time away from the United States, between 2020 and 2021, with stints in Egypt and Kuwait.

With the opportunity for a full season to continue the production that he has been known for in the division, Williams says that he is anticipating being a part of the progress that the club has made in their short history.

“I am truly excited for this upcoming season and looking forward to being a part of the Switchbacks family. The club has a strong fanbase and has laid a solid foundation over the years, and I’m just happy to be able to help this talented group of players in the best way I can,” Williams told the club website.

Williams will be joining a team that finished third in the Western Conference standings and advanced to the Western Conference Championship last year, losing to eventual USL Championship winners San Antonio FC. Williams has registered 41 regular season goals in 94 appearances in the USL Championship during his career.

Switchbacks General Manager and head coach Brendan Burke said that he values the boost that Williams can bring to their attacking unit for the immediate and long-term future.

“Romario is a player that has a 15-20 goal potential in this league and has a lot of different, high-level experiences. He is a player we are very happy to be adding to our attacking core for the next few years with this deal,” Burke said on the club website.

Williams will have familiar company at Colorado with fellow national teammates Deshane Beckford, Maalque Foster and Devon ‘Speedy’ Williams, the latter joining the club last December.
