Dunbeholden whip Tivoli 4-1 after early own goal
A Zackiya Wilks own goal early in the match proved to be only a consolation goal for Tivoli Gardens as Dunbeholden whipped the west Kingston-based club 4-1 in the Jamaica Premier League at the Ashenheim Stadium, Jamaica College, yesterday.
Despite losing three consecutive matches, Dunbeholden’s head coach, Jermaine Thomas, said they showed character to stage a comeback.
“We showed character, and that was important. When you find a team digging deep to come back, it’s a good sign, and it wasn’t like Tivoli were laying down,” Thomas said.
“They were competitive, but we showed guts, and coming off losses, it was important to show we have got guts, and getting four goals will do a lot for the players.”
After losing four of their last five matches. Tivoli coach Jermaine Johnson said they have lost confidence.
“It was a tough one. A lot of mistakes were made, and it cost us big time. The confidence is gone and we are not disciplined enough to fight for the cause, but we have to keep motivated and positive,” he said.
Tivoli got an early boost when Wilks’ deflected effort put them in front after eight minutes.
However, Dunbeholden pushed them on the backfoot until they broke their resilience in first-half added time when Stephen Barnett capitalised on a blunder by goalkeeper Nicholas Clarke from Fabian McCarthy’s freekick to nod home.
Dunbeholden continued to have the better of play in the second half, but Tivoli continued to get breaks on the counter, though nothing to really threaten their opponents.
Another blunder by Clarke led to Dunbeholden’s go-ahead goal in the 70th minute as Fabian McCarthy’s weak freekick went past him and ended in the back of the net.
Malachi Douglas (81st) and Stephen Williams, with a fine individual effort in injury time, sealed the win for the St Catherine-based team.
