BEN FRANCIS Cup champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) can breathe a little easier today after a 4-0 win over Lacovia High marked their first of the ISSA daCosta Cup season.

STETHS got their goals from R-Jay Newman in the ninth before Raheim Whyte doubled the score in the 25th. Shemmar Stewart added to the tally before an 87th-minute goal from Kaieem Lewis ended the game in style.

According to STETHS head coach Omar Wedderburn, his objective was to pile up some goals after the dry spell of their first two games.

“Every game is a must-win for us, but we came here today with the mindset that we are going to score goals, because it was long overdue,” said Wedderburn.

The coach believes STETHS have more to give and will be taking things one game at a time.

“Our new programe is ‘if you nah seh God, yuh nah seh nutt’n’ and we always saying ‘God’. We just taking our time and believing what we are doing,” he said.

Elsewhere, in a closely contested match, Cornwall College defeated Maldon High 1-0, giving the latter their first loss of the season.

The win put Cornwall on top of Zone A with 10 points — three wins and a draw — while Maldon are on nine with three wins and yesterday’s loss.

Cornwall’s Ameche Robinson scored the winning goal early in the first half, while 15-year-old Carlondo Morris was issued a red card for unsportsmanlike conduct in the 75th minute.

Cornwall’s head coach, Hector Wright, was also issued a red card at the end of the game.

“Basically, what we did today was get a goal from early and then try to control the game. That didn’t happen for the most part because the referee tried to play into the game too much,” Wright said.

In other games, Manchester High thumped DeCarteret 9-0, Dinthill hammered Tacius Golding 8-0, Ocho Rios thrashed Marcus Garvey 8-1, Belair dismissed Mt St Joseph 7-0, and Brown’s Town made light work of Discovery Bay, 7-0 as well.

In Hanover, with Zone B rivals Rusea’s High and Frome, lightning and heavy rain ended the game at half-time.

In the second minute, Rusea’s Omarion Jemmison jumped highest from a corner kick to head one in, giving his team the lead.

Games between Green Island and Knockalva, as well as Edwin Allen and Clarendon College, were also postponed.
