Wolmer’s, Gaynstead put unbeaten runs on the line

THE INTER-SECONDARY Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Urban Schoolgirl Netball Competition will step up a notch today at the Leila Robinson Courts with the staging of both junior and senior quarter-finals, as teams battle for places in Thursday’s semi-finals.

In junior action at 1 p.m., defending champions Wolmer’s take on Gaynstead, while St Hugh’s face Jose Marti. At 2 p.m., unbeaten Jonathan Grant meet Vauxhall, with Camperdown going up against Norman Manley at the same time.

In the senior quarter-finals, Norman Manley oppose Camperdown at 3 p.m., while defending champions St Catherine High take on Wolmer’s. At 4 p.m., Jose Marti meet Vauxhall, and Gaynstead go up against Merle Grove.

Undoubtedly, the junior showdown between Wolmer’s and Gaynstead will attract the most attention, as both teams look to maintain unbeaten runs. The Tracy-Ann Griffiths–coached Wolmer’s unit, who are also the defending all-island champions, will start favourites, however, after winning all five matches. Gaynstead, meanwhile, have four wins and a draw with Camperdown.

Jose Marti should start favourites over former champions St Hugh’s in their matchup. Norman Manley are expected to get by Camperdown, and unbeaten Jonathan Grant look set to get the better of Vauxhall.

The most impressive senior team so far, Gaynstead, have produced big wins in all their matches, including a 17-goal victory (41-24) over defending champions St Catherine a week ago in second-round action. They are expected to continue their dominant run when the Dalton Hinds–coached team face Merl Grove.

Defending champions St Catherine have their work cut out as they meet unbeaten Wolmer’s, with the St John’s Road-based team needing major improvement following their heavy loss to Gaynstead.

In the other senior clashes, Jose Marti should get the better of Vauxhall, while Norman Manley are favoured to get past Camperdown.
