Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) President Keith Wellington says this year’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships has gotten off to a smooth start, and he is encouraging patrons to turn out in their numbers to support the event.
The five-day event is currently under way at the National Stadium.
“We have gotten off to a smooth start because there have been no significant issues so far, and we are just hoping that the weather will remain good for the rest of the afternoon and the remainder of the championships,” Wellington said.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, the second day of the championships—which is one of the marquee days of competition—Wellington said he is anticipating a large turnout and high-quality performances from the athletes.
“Tomorrow is definitely a big day, and we are hoping to have a bumper crowd. We are expecting really great performances, with a block of finals in the 1500 metres and 100 metres,” he noted.
Wellington also highlighted the affordability of the event and the added benefit for patrons, particularly those opting for bleacher seating.
“We are encouraging everybody to come out because we know people want to support track and field, and it is especially an opportunity in the bleachers,” he said.
“The bleachers cost $500, and for that you can see seven 100-metre semi-finals and finals, as well as seven 1500-metre finals,” Wellington stated.
“And guess what? That $500 not only allows you to see these races, but it will also go towards helping schools in western Jamaica recover from the effects of Hurricane Melissa. So you will be providing yourself with entertainment while assisting with a worthy cause.”
Kingston College are the defending boys’ champions, while Hydel High are the reigning girls’ champions.
