Paul Gray took advantage of ideal weather conditions last Saturday to emerge the overall winner of the ninth staging of the Lindy Delapenha Golf Classic at the Caymanas Golf Course.
Gray, who finished atop of the field with 40 points, said, although there was a serious chance of rain, the sky held, and the overcast conditions made it ideal for golfing, which he totally enjoyed.
"The whole afternoon was pretty decent. The sun was in, so it was pretty cool. We were worried at first because of the rain but we never had the stress of the sun. So we were able to just relax and play golf."
He believes his familiarity with the Caymanas course also gave him an edge over many of the golfers.
"This is my home course. So I know the course inside out and today (Saturday) it played according to how I anticipated," he said.
Meanwhile, the men's title went to Damion Chung with 39 points. Delroy Johnson and Delroy Anderson finished second and third, respectively, on 38 points.
The Men's Super Seniors title was taken by Andre Forte with 38 points. Khaleel Azan took second with 37 points and Teddy Alexander was third with 37 points.
Dion Hudson won the female honours with 37 points ahead of Diane Hanson (32 points) and Daedre Edwards (31 points).
Meanwhile, Gray said it was pleasing to see that so many came out to play in honour of the 'charismatic' Delapenha, a late great national sports icon and a former Munro College old boy.
The event, put on by the Munro College Old Boys’ Association, is in aid of the school's sports programmes, and Gray noted that the local golf community is always looking to support initiatives like it.
"The golfing community, hats off to them. We make it part of our weekly activity to look out for tournaments like this, especially when they have significant cause behind them.
"As you saw the field was filled with golfers. We had about 70 or more, and this is just the community spirit.
"And, for Munro and what they represent, we will do it today, tomorrow and years to come, especially given the name behind the branding of the tournament, Lindy Delapenha.
"We know this individual. We know how charismatic he was ,and he played the sports as well. So, for us to turn out in his honour and for the school he attended is so significant," he said.
