Shamar Joseph announced himself as a genuine T20 force on Sunday, ripping through Sri Lanka’s batting line-up to claim a maiden five-wicket haul and power the West Indies to a 2-1 series victory at a jubilant Sabina Park.

Every wicket, every catch was cheered as Joseph demonstrated the art of smart, calculated fast bowling in the shortest format of the game.

The young fast bowler finished with stunning figures of 5 for 33 for his first-ever T20 five-for, as the home side clinched the decider in front of a raucous Jamaican crowd.

“I mean, it’s exciting for me, my first five-wicket haul in T20. I couldn’t ask for anything better,” Joseph said after the match.

“And also, a match-winning series for the West Indies team and especially for Jamaica. The support that they bring out to us, there’s nothing more encouraging than having fans behind your back. It just gives you that courage to keep going.”

Joseph’s heroics capped a remarkable Player of the Sseries campaign. He finished the three-match T20 series with 11 wickets, a haul that underlined his growing importance to the regional side across all formats, including the preceding One-Day International.

When asked if he was proud of his performances across all four limited-overs matches, Joseph nodded without hesitation.

“I mean, sometimes we fall short, but it always comes back. It’s the West Indies at the end of the day,” he said. “We play that good cricket. T20 is our game. We go about it hard, and we execute. So I’m excited about that.”

Pressed on how he stays sharp whenever called upon, Joseph credited the captain’s mantra.

“It’s all about the captain,” he reiterates,

“‘Always be ready to come and bowl.’ So it’s just me to come here and execute and be ready to go again.”

And yes, he confirmed with a grin, he is very happy with his overall performance.

“Yes, definitely. 11 wickets in the series, I can’t ask for better.”
