Five years of determination, commitment and perseverance paid off for Balmagie Primary School, which emerged champions of the 2026 Youth Football League (YFL) Junior Cup Kingston and St Andrew Regional Championship at the UWI Mona Bowl on Saturday.

Balmagie secured the title with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Iris Gelly Primary in the championship final, marking a significant milestone for a school that has participated in the Junior Cup since its inception in 2022.

Under the guidance of coach Donald Eccleston, Balmagie has built an impressive football record, capturing consecutive Champions Cup titles in 2025 and 2026 with victories over Sts Peter and Paul Preparatory School and Emmanuel Christian Academy, respectively. The Junior Cup title, however, had previously eluded them.

The Kingston and St Andrew tournament brought together schools from across the Corporate Area and beyond, producing a day of competitive Under-11 football as young players showcased skill, determination, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Among the day’s highlights was a tense semi-final encounter between Balmagie and Spanish Town Primary, which was decided by a penalty shootout. The other semi-final featured Mona Heights Primary and Iris Gelly, two teams that impressed throughout the competition. Iris Gelly ran out 3-0 winners.

For Eccleston, the championship represented the culmination of years of hard work, commitment and belief in his young players.

“This victory means a lot to us. We have been participating in the Junior Cup since 2022, and every year we have continued to work hard and develop our players. We have won the Champions Cup twice, but winning the Junior Cup was something we really wanted to achieve. I am extremely proud of these boys, their discipline, their commitment, and the way they represented their school. This is a special moment for our entire school community,” said Eccleston.

‘Investing in our Children’

The Kingston and St Andrew Regional Championship was supported by Purewater, one of the Youth Football League’s partners, whose commitment has helped provide an important platform for young footballers to develop and showcase their talent.

Christopher Walter, representing Purewater, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to youth development.

“At Purewater, we believe that investing in our children is an investment in Jamaica’s future. The Junior Cup is doing tremendous work by providing young players with opportunities to develop their skills, build confidence and experience healthy competition. We are proud to support an initiative that goes beyond football and makes a meaningful difference in the lives of children and their school communities,” said Walter.

Following regional competitions in Trelawny, St Catherine, and Kingston and St Andrew, attention now turns to the highly anticipated Junior Cup All-Island Championship on Saturday at the UWI Mona Bowl.

The championship will bring together the top four teams from each regional tournament, creating an exciting opportunity for schools from different parishes to compete for national honours.
