Police seize millions of dollars in marijuana
PORT-OF-SPAIN (CMC):
A Venezuelan national is among three men detained by law enforcement authorities after a vessel was intercepted in the Gulf of Paria with marijuana worth more than TT$14 million (one TT dollar=US$0.16 cents) on Tuesday, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service reported Wednesday.
According to the police, a Customs and Excise vessel was on patrol in the Gulf of Paria, when the officers observed a fishing vessel with three men on board, who were acting in a suspicious manner.
“The Customs officials intercepted the fishing vessel, detained the three men and the vessel was escorted to Hart’s Cut Bay, Chaguaramas, where it was docked,” the statement said, adding that officers of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) conducted an extensive search of the vessel, discovering 295 packages with the marijuana weighing 158.54 kilograms, with a street value of TT$14,251,542.
