Freedom from ‘hoping’

Hope is often what keeps us going through difficult times. It gives us the strength to endure pain, face uncertainty, and believe that life can get better. Like a soothing balm, hope comforts the mind and helps us hold on when circumstances seem overwhelming. But have we ever paused to ask whether our constant hope for a better future is preventing us from creating a better present?

HOPE IS A DISTRACTION

Hope always points towards tomorrow. Tomorrow is born from the womb of today. Today is full of problems, stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction. Can a fulfilled, peaceful tomorrow be born from this kind of today? Our happiness, kindness, and stability wait for a better tomorrow to arrive; however, every tomorrow arrives as today.

The habit of hoping is an obstacle to experiencing the present in its entirety. While hope offers temporary comfort by distracting our mind towards a better tomorrow, it also encourages us to overlook the transformation required today. We keep waiting for circumstances to change instead of changing our current thoughts, attitudes, and responses.

NOT HOPELESSNESS

Freedom from hope does not mean becoming hopeless or losing faith in life. Hopelessness arises when expectations collapse, whereas freedom from hope means no longer depending on an imagined future to find peace today.

We may hope that our emotional wounds will heal with time, but time alone does not always heal them. Unless we understand the cause of our pain, change our thinking and release their grip, we may carry the same wounds for years. Spiritual awareness invites us to face the present honestly and entirely, without escaping into comforting possibilities about tomorrow.

Being positive is essential, but positivity must be directed towards the present. Instead of merely hoping for a peaceful future, we can practice peaceful thoughts now. Instead of waiting for love, we can become more loving today. Instead of hoping for freedom from anger, we can learn to respond with patience in the moment of irritation.

STARTING POINT

The present may be painful, but it is real, and therefore it is where change is possible. A beautiful future can inspire us, but imagining it cannot transform our present. Every new moment offers an opportunity to choose a clearer thought, a kinder response, and a lighter state of mind. Real purification of the mind can only begin in the present.

Life becomes better only when we become better within. We may not be able to change every situation immediately, but we can begin by changing the consciousness with which we meet it.

Create a better now. Tomorrow becomes a natural extension of the peace you have already begun to experience.
