Munro stay perfect

A five-star display from seven-time champions Munro College against Black River High at the Munro playing field yesterday saw them extend their unbeaten run in the ISSA daCosta Cup preliminary round.

Munro wasted little time getting on the scoresheet, breaking the deadlock in the opening minute through Izion Fraser, who rose highest to head home.

Fraser and Kajaye Williams both scored braces, and Akel Vesprey added the other goal.

Williams doubled Munro’s lead in the fifth minute before completing his brace in the 24th.

The attacker could have had a hat-trick but failed to convert a penalty after Black River goalkeeper Nishane Lewis made the save.

Vesprey then finished from a Fraser assist in the 41st minute, sending the home side into the break with a commanding 4-0 lead.

Fraser completed his brace in the 51st minute, finishing a cross from Vesprey to seal the comfortable victory.

Munro coach Everdean Scarlett said his main objective was to avoid defeat and maintain the team’s consistency at home.

“We first must give God thanks for the three points. We scored four goals in the first half. I mean, what more can a coach ask for? The aim today was not to lose the game, and I think the guys came out today and gave a good account of themselves,” said Scarlett.

“We made some changes in the second half and brought on some younger players. As you can see, the intensity of the game didn’t drop, and I think they came on and gave a good account of themselves as well,” he added.

Meanwhile, Black River coach Vayden Hayle admitted that his team struggled defensively after conceding early.

“I just think tactically, we were a bit indisciplined, and then we conceded that early goal, which I think kind of blew the wind out of the young men. I think we just did not bounce back from that,” said Hayle.

“I am just really disappointed with how we conceded the goals, to be honest. I think we could have done better with how we defended.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game because Munro has been playing well. I think if we were just disciplined enough, we would have lessened some of the chances that Munro created.”
