Gospel singer Kevin Downswell had three words to describe how he felt about being among the 43 distinguished persons who have been conferred with membership in the Order of Distinction in the rank of officer (OD) for the year 2025.

“Humbled beyond words,” Downswell told The Sunday Gleaner during an interview in which he spoke about the secret to his success, the song which is the soundtrack to his life and the merits of earthly accolades for gospel artistes.

An ordained evangelist, author and motivational speaker, Downswell is being recognised for his contribution to gospel music, locally and internationally. This honour comes 22 years after Downswell crooned his way into the hearts of Jamaicans with the song Praise, and won the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Gospel Song Competition, as it was called then.

Downswell, who has made his name on the international gospel circuit and established his own Kevin Downswell Ministry, has never forgotten his start and is a regular performer at JCDC events during the Independence season. An in-demand performer, he was one of the opening acts for multi-Grammy Award-winning gospel powerhouse CeCe Winans at King’s House recently.

“The experience was a divine moment in my ministry,” Downswell said. “There was a holy weight in that place ... it wasn’t just a concert, it felt like heaven met earth right here in Kingston.”

With hit songs such as You Make Me Stronger, Carry Me, God is Moving, If It’s Not You, Already Done, and Close to You, Downswell has secured a global fan base and is in demand in Africa. On his birthday, July 24, Downswell shared a social media post about his happiness at standing on African soil and getting ready to perform on that continent for the first time. “It’s my birthday, and I’m standing right here in Ghana getting ready to head to Nigeria. What an incredible thing to be able to stand in the promise that God made for you,” he wrote.

Currently in promotional mode for his newest track, From Midnight to Victory, while still intent on making more new music, Downswell pushed pause in the studio and sat down with The Sunday Gleaner, reflecting on his journey, faith, and the meaning of this recognition.

1. What was your reaction when you first heard about the OD?

Honestly, I was speechless. For a moment, I just sat still and whispered, “God… You did this.” To be recognised at this level by the country that raised me is humbling beyond words. It wasn’t just a personal win; it felt like an entire lifetime of obedience, sacrifice, and midnight worship being acknowledged.

2. Is an OD an honour that you have dreamt about receiving?

Not in the traditional sense. I never pursued this path for awards. I pursued the assignment. I pursued God’s presence and purpose for me, for each season. But in my quiet time, I’ve always believed that when you walk faithfully in what God has called you to do, He will honour you publicly in His timing. So, this moment? It’s more than I ever imagined, but not more than God can do.

3. What is the reaction from family, friends and fans?

Overwhelming joy. I’ve received voice notes with people crying, messages from around the world, [and] people who’ve journeyed with me from the green rooms to the global stages. My family is proud. My supporters are celebrating like it’s their own, and honestly, it is. This honour belongs to all of us.

4. How important are ‘earthly accolades’ to members of the gospel music fraternity?

They aren’t the goal, but they are a grace. We don’t sing for applause; we sing for transformation. But when the world recognises the impact of gospel music, especially in a culture that often overlooks it, that means something. These accolades open doors, spark conversations, and remind the nation that God’s voice matters in every space.

5. If there is one song that is the soundtrack of your life, what would that song be?

It would have to be You Make Me Stronger. That song wasn’t just a hit; it was a declaration. I’ve walked through some deep valleys… but every time, God showed me that strength is made perfect in weakness. That song still carries me ... still speaks for me.

6. You have been a dominant force in the gospel arena for many seasons. What is the secret to your success?

Obedience. Prayer. Consistency. God’s grace. And knowing when to get out of the way and let God lead. I’ve never chased trends; I’ve chased presence. I believe success in this space isn’t just about what you release, but what you’re carrying. God’s presence does open doors we could never open on our own.

7. What is your advice to up-and-coming gospel artistes?

Stay rooted in the secret place. Don’t just chase stages, chase God’s heart. Let Him break you, mould you, and use you. Protect your oil. Work on your craft but guard your character. Because when the lights fade, only what was built on the Rock will remain. And lastly, let your love for God be expressed through loving the people He called you to touch.
