Vintage flavour at Ribbiz Big People Sundays Groovy Edition
Ribbiz Ultra Lounge was transformed into a nostalgic time capsule as the end-of-month Groovy Edition of Big People Sundays brought together a vibrant crowd ready to relive the golden eras of music. From the moment the doors opened, patrons showed up as early as 5:30 p.m. dressed to vibe, and full of excitement for what turned out to be an unforgettable night.
Patrons were quick to share their love for the event’s fresh retro concept and the playful decor, complete with massive balloons suspended from the ceiling that added a whimsical flair to the venue’s classic ambience.
The soundtrack for the evening was nothing short of iconic. The crowd belted out every word to timeless hits like Islands in the Stream (Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers); Mud Up (Super Cat); Rockin’ Soul (Hues Corporation); and Uptown Top Ranking (Althea & Donna).
Brian Chung, co-owner of Ribbiz Ultra Lounge, joined in the revellery with his retro look.
“It was just a very vibrant atmosphere. The people really came out for a party experience, and not just a regular drink-up night, making the night much more magical,” Chung said.
In a funny twist that could only happen at a truly lively event, a brief glitch with the DJ setup went undetected as it was no match for the crowd’s full-throttle singalong during Islands in the Stream. The vibes were so strong that not even a hiccup could slow the energy, and the music picked right back up without missing a beat.
The night was powered by none other than DJ Richie Clarke from Kool FM alongside DJ Smurf, who both delivered masterful selections that kept the dance floor grooving from start to finish. As the weekly Ribbiz Big People Sundays series continues, patrons can expect more themed editions, elevated experiences, and of course, music that brings generations together.
“Quite a few patrons were dressed in retro outfits. There were lots of sunglasses in the club, neon necklace and bracelets, men in their fedora hats, bright coloured shirts, and you know once Jamaicans hear “party” they draw for their white pants or white outfits, so we had a few of that,” Chung said.
Noting the massive success of the themed event, Chung teases the idea that the next themed night just might be an All White edition.
