Jermaine Blair has had a long and impressive career in the world of beauty pageants. Over the past 12 years, he’s gone from training contestants in walk and pose to judging high school and college pageants, and eventually becoming the franchise holder and regional manager for Miss Universe Jamaica East. Most recently, he added another title to his portfolio as the franchise holder for Miss Global Jamaica.

“I am both elated and excited. You know, being a national director of a pageant franchise mean it’s a little bit more pressure to ensure that the standard is maintained, but I do think we can even raise the standard to a higher degree here in Jamaica,” Blair told The Gleaner.

“I know that for pageantry, we’ve seen a lot of production, a lot of shows, a lot of contestants, but there are so many things that I’d love to do, not just with the competition, but to also help the women of the pageant to be able to give back to Jamaica meaningfully,” he added.

The Miss Global beauty pageant was established in 2013, not to be confused with the Miss Global International beauty pageant, owned and founded by Montego Bay businessman Lachu Ramchandani. With Miss Global Jamaica still in its early stages, Blair sees many possibilities for the local franchise’s growth within the international pageant system.

“I see the brand being one of the biggest in Jamaica. I see the brand making Miss Global a household name here in Jamaica, so that when they go abroad, they are already recognised. I see the brand making impacts in spaces that will allow charitable organisations to get meaningful donations and support through the brand,” Blair explained.

But it’s not all about what that brand can be, but also where the contestants can go and grow as people.

“I see empowerment for our women … so that we can have more empowered women, more holistic women, going into spaces and taking off because that’s what the brand is about,” he continued.

Blair will certainly have his hands full, as he now holds the Miss Global Jamaica franchise while continuing his leadership of Miss Universe Jamaica East.

“It will be a lot of work for sure, but both pageants carry some similarities which I think will make it a little easier to manage at the same time. There are a few format changes that will be needed, but I am confident my team and I will continue to do adopt and grow and excel,” Blair said.

The current Miss Global Jamaica is Keri-Ann Greenwood, who represented Jamaica at the Miss Global competition in Thailand in March, finishing as first runner-up. This marked Jamaica’s highest placement in the pageant, which the country has entered on four previous occasions.

Casting calls for the next Miss Global Jamaica officially opened earlier this week, as the search begins for a new titleholder.
