Sports greats honoured at awards function

Several persons in the sports fraternity were honoured at the Carreras Sports Foundation Awards. Grace Jackson and Jeffrey Dujon copped the top awards while others got certificates of merit.

Dujon, Jackson the best of 1988

JEFFREY DUJON and Grace Jackson were crowned sportsman and sportswoman for 1988 at the annual Carreras Sports Foundation Awards ceremony at the Wyndham Hotel on Thursday night.

Dujon, the Jamaica West Indies wicketkeeper/-atsman, won the Sportsman of the Year award from a field of 10 nominees and Olympic silver medallist Jackson was one of four nominees for the Sportswoman of the Year award

Runner-up to Dujon was Olympic hurdler Winthrop Graham, with Olympic sprinter MerleneOttey taking the second spot to Jackson. 

 

The top awards were presented by the minister of labour, welfare and sport and Dr Edward Baugh, head of the English Department at the University of the West Indies, with Minister Simpson making the presentation to Dujon and Dr Baugh to Jackson.

Certificates of merit were presented to the following six people for their contribution to sports: Aubrey Campbell – track and field; Lindy Delapenha – sports broadcasting; Georgia Hudson-Thompson – hockey; Dennis Johnson – track and field; Rohan Kanhai – cricket; George Sterling – cricket.
