MacGillivray sworn in as acting governor
O'Regan now acting colonial secretary
The Hon D. C. MacGillivray, CMG, took over the administrative reins of Jamaica on Saturday at 6.30 p.m., when he was sworn in as acting governor of Jamaica during the period between now and the arrival of a new governor to succeed Sir John Huggins, GCMG.
The oath of office was administered by the acting chief justice, the Hon Mr Justice Carberry, at King’s House in the presence of members of the Privy Council and the Executive Council. Earlier that day, Mr MacGillivray had journeyed to Port Antonio to see off Sir John Huggins and his family as Sir John left Jamaica for the last time as governor of the colony. The acting governor and Mrs MacGillivray have taken up residence at King’s House and, on present indications, will remain there until about April next year, when Sir John’s successor is expected to arrive in the island.
Mr John O'Regan, deputy colonial secretary, is now acting as colonial secretary in place of Mr MacGillivray. Mr O'Regan was sworn in at the same time as a member of the Executive Council.
