Former JBU head George Simpson passes
WESTERN BUREAU:
Former president of the Jamaica Baptist Union (JBU), the Reverend Dr George Simpson, died yesterday at the age of 76.
Simpson, who served as pastor of the Mount Carey Baptist Church for more than three decades, was shot and stabbed numerous times in 2008 on the verandah of the church manse.
Simpson was invested with the Order of Distinction, Officer Class, in 2003 and resigned from active Christian ministry after 46 years in 2015.
Over the period, he served in various roles, including as pastor of the Stewart Town Baptist Circuit of Churches in Trelawny for 11 years before moving to the Mount Carey Baptist Circuit of Church in St James in 1980.
In a statement yesterday, the JBU said Simpson was loyal to the ministry.
“We will long remember, with gratitude to God, his passion for ministry and loyalty to the denomination, both of which remained strong even after he suffered that vicious attack on his life in 2008,” the JBU said.
In the attack 12 years ago, Simpson was shot in the face, abdomen and chest by the hoodlums, who also inflicted knife wounds to both hands, leg and abdomen.
