Hanover to get 20 new district constables
WESTERN BUREAU:
Superintendent Andrew Nish, the police commander for Hanover, says the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has approved the recruitment of 20 new district constables following a request to strengthen the parish’s policing capacity.
Speaking at last Thursday’s monthly meeting of the Hanover Municipal Corporation (HMC), Nish highlighted that the number of district constables in the parish had decreased in recent years due to various factors, leading to the need for new recruits.
“We did a recruiting drive recently, because if you look around, you will realise that some of the district constables that you saw serving with you a couple years ago, they are not there anymore. Plus the ones that are here now, they are pretty much soon gone into retirement,” he said.
“So, we applied for 20 additional district constables, and that approval was afforded to us,” added Nish.
Nish also shared that 70 individuals had sat the entry examination for the position, with 46 passing. The final 20 constables will be selected from this group based on other criteria.
He said those who do not make the final cut will be added to a database and may be deployed to other parishes if there’s a need for their service.
“This is a huge move for us as a parish and a nation, in the right direction,” said the commander, crediting the JCF’s outreach programmes. “The interest of individuals within Hanover to serve their communities is very good.”
Nish also expressed his satisfaction with the active police youth clubs in the parish, emphasizing their role in fostering better relationships between the police and the community.
Regarding Green Island, which has become a challenging area for law enforcement, Nish revealed plans for a community initiative named ‘Logwood Comes Alive’, which will also involve the general Logwood area. Details about this initiative will be shared soon, he added.
