Does road code apply to taxi drivers?
THE EDITOR, Sir:
At every major intersection in Kingston, taxi drivers use the filter lane, or make a third lane in the middle of the road and drive to the front of the line of traffic. The police have allowed the practice to go on so long, it has now become the norm.
They stop anywhere and everywhere - even on the busy corner by Jamaica National Bank in Half-Way Tree and block one lane of traffic.
They play lewd, loud music in midnight-tinted cars as they take to the wrong side of the road and overtake lines of traffic on Molynes and Red Hills roads. A friend of mine is now temporarily without a car as his vehicle was involved in a head-on crash with one of these daredevil drivers.
It's useless giving them traffic tickets. They have dozens in their glove compartment. The only real deterrent is to revoke their licence when they have exceeded their limit in demerit points. However, for some unknown reason, this law is never enforced.
