Groundbreaking liver transplants at Bustamante

Published:Sunday | September 30, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Just last week, medicine in Jamaica got a major win when two young boys with biliary atresia got liver transplants at the Bustamante Hospital for Children, thanks to Jacksonville surgeons.

In late May, it was announced that Dr Stephen Dunn would come to our island to do these surgeries. Not only did he come with the intention of helping these young boys, but also to train Jamaican doctors on how to perform what can be life-saving surgery.

This is fantastic news for Jamaica. We are heading in the right direction. There are many persons in Jamaica who will benefit from these new skills.

With the push for transplantation growing, I can only hope that we will eventually reach the place where we have a full transplant centre and measures put in place where persons can sign up to be organ donors. I hope that legislation will move parallel to medicine and in a matter of years we will be able to further serve the population.

Hats off to the team that made this happen! I look forward to the future of medicine and transplantation here in our beautiful home, Jamaica.
