Extend GCT waiver to local purchases

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Hurricane Melissa has tested Jamaica, across the island, families and businesses are doing their best to rebuild and recover.

The Government’s swift decision to allow duty-free and GCT-free importation of specific items for 30 days is an admirable step. However, for many people, 30 days is a short window.

As someone on the ground who witnessed both the devastation and the determination of our people, the government should consider another perspective. Perhaps the Government might consider extending the GCT waiver, not just on imports, but also allow a wavier on locally purchased rebuilding materials for a limited period.

In addition, many supplies – generators, roofing materials, and tools – are already available locally. The GCT waiver currently applies only to imports, which may make it harder for people to purchase from local businesses that are also struggling to recover.

This adjustment would help those most severely affected to recover faster, while those less affected — especially within the tourism sector — could resume operations sooner. In turn, that would help restore livelihoods, rebuild tourism, and accelerate Jamaica’s overall recovery.

It is through practical, people-centred measures like these that we can strengthen both recovery and national unity.
