Patients deserve better care in public hospitals

THE EDITOR, Madam:
As a concerned Jamaican living in the United States, I am deeply troubled by the conditions facing patients in our public hospitals. From what I have observed and been told, it is not uncommon for there to be no available beds, and even when space exists, essential items such as clean sheets are often lacking.
It is disheartening to witness the continued deterioration of our healthcare system in a country that aspires to progress beyond “third world” status. Many citizens are left to endure substandard care, while those in positions of authority can afford to seek treatment overseas. This stark contrast raises serious questions about equity and accountability.
What is being done to improve conditions? Too often, promises made during election periods seem quickly forgotten. The Government has a duty to ensure that all Jamaicans—regardless of social standing—receive decent and quality healthcare.
Our people deserve better.
