Kabreco Designs expands home décor business
Blending business with love takes more than just a shared vision – it takes teamwork and passion. For husband-and-wife duo Kaya and Eric Coore, what started as crafting items such as planters blossomed into designing and crafting striking statement pieces for the home.
“When we started out in 2022, we were mostly focusing on wooden items like planters and cutting boards. Since then, we have expanded to cases for card decks and domino sets, [and] calendars, Christmas decorations, photo frames and keychains for just about every special occasion. So we have stayed true to our core. But we’re also branching out,” Kaya, co-owner of Kabreco Designs, told Living.
For a previous Mother’s Day, they released a special line of rustic planters to celebrate moms, thoughtfully designed for the occasion. This year, they extended the sentiment to Father’s Day as well, introducing a range of heartfelt creations, including their popular dad frames.
The typical turnaround for pieces is 10 business days. But if it’s within a gifting period, then it might take longer. However, the pair is always big on communication.
Having gotten its start during the global pandemic, the business has had its fair share of ups and downs. But the dynamic duo remains determined to satisfy the market and build their legacy.
“The biggest lesson entrepreneurship has taught me is to go with my gut feeling. Sometimes there’s that inner voice that tells you this doesn’t feel right. I don’t ignore it. I want it to be a meeting of the minds. You love our products and we are happy to sell them to you,” Kaya revealed.
While for Eric, he has learnt to develop the discipline needed to continue pushing and executing. “There are times when you’re executing and you wonder if this thing will work. But once you have that plan and you’re executing, most of the time it’s after you have executed that you say, ‘yes, this thing really works’,” he said.
He continued by noting that there are times when motivation is at an all-time low. But it is then that God sends a sign that they should continue. “There [have] been lots of times that we feel that this is not working at all. As a matter of fact, when we received the Craft and Coffee Quality Showcase for Best Corporate Gift and Best Souvenir, we were shocked. Two weeks prior to then, we were considering whether we should press on or back out,” said Eric.
Kaya chimed in by saying, “It couldn’t have come at a better time. It was like the universe saying ‘yes, push on’.”
Eric has even ventured off into art, and had a beautiful piece on display at this year’s Jamaica Expo showcase. “I did art back in high school, but I never followed through with it. Things were different back then. When it came to a profession, children were either pushed to become doctors or engineers. And I did the latter, pushing things like art in the background.”
But as he evolved, so too did his love for art. And, he has had the honour of sharing this love with his daughter. “I haven’t gone fully into it because I’m hoping to reel her in because she is studying art in school. And I would love for her to bring that [creativity] to the business. But we [will] see.”
When it comes to balance, the father, husband, and creative mind behind Kabreco Designs still holds down his job as a mechanical engineer, while Kaya walked away from her nine-to-five to pursue the business full time.
“Unfortunately, I don’t make the products. So, all the pressure is on Eric to do this. Most of the time, he comes home from a long day and works through the night to get the products done. We support each other as best as we can. But it’s not easy. I am miserable, and Eric is a perfectionist. At the end of the day, there is mutual love, respect and a beautiful connection,” Kaya highlighted.
The pair has also been fortunate to be a part of the Honey Bun Advisory Committee Programme, a one-year programme where a company is paired with three advisors for the year.“Each company is assigned three mentors. And by mentors, I mean mentor in the real sense of mentorship. We have persons at a higher level helping us with finance, marketing, and project management. So, it’s about three industry leaders getting into the nitty-gritty of our business,” she shared. So there are even greater plans in store for 2026.
The overall vision for Kabreco Designs is to have an accessory store, which includes end tables, lamps and Jamaican art. “Our aim is to live well, to continue making our clients happy, keep putting our brand out there in the public and to be the number-one accessory store. If somebody is thinking of getting something unique and needs something personalised, I want us to immediately come to mind,” Kaya said.
