LEE’S FIFTH Avenue, known for its catchy 1980s television advertisements, starring a hip-looking and much-younger Lee Issa, launched its Lee’s Fifth Avenue Outdoors last Saturday.

The trendy line, which aims to suit all tastes, has a modernist appeal which blends seamlessly with the store’s interior home décor and has a decidedly Mediterranean feel.

Sonia Trehan, general manager, highlighted the line’s durability against outdoor elements but admitted some of the pieces appeared destined as indoor furnishing, especially for the Airbnb market.

“The pieces are very light, incorporating powder-coated aluminium, teak wood and waterproof cushions,” Trehan pointed out.

Teak wood, used in boat-building and exterior construction, is particularly valued for its durability and water resistance.

“The designs reflect the latest trend, and they are pretty sturdy, which would be perfect for people with Airbnbs. They wouldn’t have to be replacing furniture, both indoors and outdoors, with regularity,” Trehan added.

The Noa extendable dinner set, prepped for Christmas dinner, was a hit with shoppers, who turned out for Lee’s Fifth Avenue’s Customer Appreciation Day, which featured a fashion show and live musical performance by Nadine Blair and Perpetual Sounds of Praise.

“A lot of people are loving the dining set,” said Trehan, noting dining areas hold pride of place within Jamaican households.

Designed for “effortless functionality”, the Noa extendable dinner set seats six diners, extended to 10, if necessary, making it perfect for family gatherings.

The table features broad, straight legs and a teak-slatted top that goes with matching chairs, the teak wood in grey-orange and aluminium sections in matt grey.

The Olivia lounger sofa, showcased as “a stylish and durable outdoor seating solution”, in orange-grey teak and cream white fabric cushions, exudes luxury suited for both indoors and outdoors.

Observing shoppers browse the deals on offer while singing and dancing to the gospel songs of Blair and Perpetual Sounds of Praise, as well as enjoying the culinary delights on customer-appreciation day, Trehan said Lee’s Fifth Avenue wants to maintain the “social interaction” of shopping locally.

“Shopping locally is a social activity which supports the economy. Overseas online shopping has been killing local businesses,” Trehan lamented.

“We have to think carefully about what we are doing. When you shop at Lee’s or any local merchant, you’re supporting the security guard at the door, the floor staff, the person who cleans the store, the delivery men and everybody associated with the business,” she pointed out.

“Not many people knew that Lee’s Fifth Avenue was into furniture, but it has been going well because we price to sell,” said Trehan.
