Portia leaving PNP post at the right time, legacy secure - Chang

Political commentator Kevin O'Brien Chang says People's National Party (PNP) president Portia Simspon Miller is leaving the post at the right time and with her legacy secure.

Addressing Comrades at the party's National Executive Council meetin‎g yesterday, Simpson Miller announced that she would not be seeking re-election next September.

She said a date would be announced for her departure.

Chang says Simpson Miller is leaving the party's top post with dignity and is avoiding the mistake of staying at the top too long.

Simpson Miller's announcement came less than a week after the party lost the local government elections to the JLP which swept eight municipal corporations.

That loss compounded the PNP's defeat in the February 25 general election.

However, Chang says Simpson Miller is still leaving a great legacy.

Simpson Miller was elected PNP president on February 25, 2006, beating Peter Phillips, Omar Davies and Karl Blythe.

She has since faced challenges on separate occasions from‎ Phillips and Blythe, but prevailed with the overwhelming majority of votes.
