Teachers disappointed over wage talks

The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) says it has again been left disappointed after the government failed to present it with an improved wage offer.

The JTA met with finance ministry officials in a rescheduled meeting yesterday.

But Head of the JTA, Georgia Waugh-Richards, says the Minister of Finance Audley Shaw only indicated he would have consultations with the Cabinet on specific items of the claim ahead of another meeting.

Yesterday’s development is the latest in a string of disappointments for the island’s teachers.

The meeting was originally scheduled for last week, after the JTA issued an ultimatum to the government for it to resume wage talks with the union.

The talks had broken down after the teachers rejected the government’s offer of a three per cent wage increase in year one and three per cent for year two.
