St Ann honours three of its own

The St Ann Homecoming and Heritage Foundation on Saturday night paid homage to two institutions and an individual who have made significant contributions to the parish.

At its 13th Annual Awards Banquet held at Jewel Dunn's River in Mammee Bay, St Ann, the foundation honoured Rickert Allen, the National Commercial Bank (NCB) St Ann's Bay Branch, and the St Ann Parish Library.

St Ann-born Allen, the current human resources senior general manager of NCB Group, was recognised in the Individual category.

The St Ann's Bay branch of NCB was presented with an Institutional Award with specific reference to financial development and management, while the library was presented with the foundation's Most Outstanding Public Sector Parish Award, which is a new category.

Citations were read and presented in their honour.

The foundation said that the 2018 awardees join a list of persons and institutions from the parish "who have received Foundation Awards, including Reverend Neville Callam, general secretary of the Baptist World Alliance; Dr Cliff Riley, chief executive officer, Scientific Research Council; Reverend Dr Frank Lawrence, chairman of the Parish Cultural Development Committee; Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, former chief of staff, Jamaica Defence Force; Cecil Simmonds, businessman and philanthropist; Walter Scott, attorney-at-law; and Noranda Bauxite Company."

The awards banquet is the highlight of the foundation's list of yearly activities, which includes the Marcus Garvey Public Lecture, which this year was presented by Vivian Crawford, director, The Institute of Jamaica, and the renewal of a mentorship programme designed for grade-four boys of the St Ann's Bay Primary School.
