Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton has said that a new diagnostic centre is to be completed at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St James by yearend.

Tufton further disclosed that 80 new beds will be added to the institution by the end of the month.

They will complement the new Accident and Emergency department which was officially opened last month.

The facility has been undergoing extensive repairs to fix air-quality problems.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, Tufton said the diagnostic centre is being constructed next to the A&E facility.

“On (the issue of ) bed count, in another few weeks we would have added another 80 beds to the existing 220 beds. This will significantly, again, improve our ability to provide in-patient care,” he said.

Tufton said that the progress of the repairs to the hospital has been steady, adding that he believes that all is being done to enhance the quality of services being provided at the institution.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: A previous version of this article stated that 20 new beds were being added and suggested that construction of the new diagnostic centre had not yet started.)
