Collis Brown Trial: Cop denies killing one of three men in Clarendon
Murder-accused Constable Collis 'Chucky' Brown this morning gave an unsworn statement to the court in which he denied having any part in the killing of one of three men in Clarendon between 2009 and 2012.
Brown told the court that he had no part in the murder of Robert 'Gutty' Dawkins, but admitted to participating in the killing of Dwayne "Murderous" Douglas and Andrew Fearon in 2012, based on instructions from a "superior cop".
"As it relates to the shooting death of Damoy (Robert) Dawkins, o/c Gutty, I did not have anything to do with it. I never shot and killed Damoy Dawkins," Brown said from the dock as his trial continued in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston.
Brown is being tried for the 2009 murder of Dawkins, as well as the 2012 murders of Douglas and Fearon.
Referring to the murders of Douglas and Fearon, Brown said: "I received the information from my superior at the time who was (a senior officer) and proceeded to the location with other members. The unit was spotted and stopped by the police. The men hurriedly exited the vehicle, one person came from the rear of the vehicle, opened gunfire at us. I myself and others returned gunfire in their direction."
He added that after the shoot-out, the deceased men were observed on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds.
Brown also rejected a claim that he made arrangements to meet with the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM). He said it was the agency that requested to meet with him after he consulted with a former high-ranking police officer.
“A few days later I received a telephone call from one (INDECOM officer) who told me that he works at INDECOM and he could assist me. We had a discussion. As a result of the discussion a meeting was had in the parish of Manchester.
"I proceeded to the location where I met with (the INDECOM officer) and a man who identified himself as Hamish Campbell. In the discussion, I was told that I would be meeting with the Commissioner of INDECOM. We had a discussion and I left the location. Certain things were discussed as I was about to leave the location for the protection of my wife and my son,” Brown said.
Brown is also charged with one count of wounding with intent and one count of conspiracy to commit murder.
