ADRIAN SHACKLEFORD is a purpose-driven and resilient young man who has a constant drive for personal growth while working assiduously towards inspiring others. Humble, passionate, and supportive, Shackleford has been making a positive impact in his community through technical and vocational education and training (TVET), inculcating in others a strong desire to succeed.

TVET is a system of education that prepares students for employment by equipping them with skills and knowledge relevant to specific trades and industries. It is seen as a key driver of national development and plays a vital role in supporting economic growth by addressing the gap between workforce skills and industry demands.

Shackleford, born in the bread basket parish of St Elizabeth, Goshen to be exact, said growing up was a mix of challenges and life lessons. He had access to limited resources, but the sense of community, family, support, and a strong work ethic helped to shape him.

“I learned early on to value hard work, stay humble, and appreciate the opportunities that come with perseverance,” he said.

Shackleford, attended the Lacovia High School, which he said played a significant role in shaping his mindset and direction. “My experience there was enriching. I had supportive teachers and a vibrant school community. Initially, I was drawn to electronics engineering and anything technical. I have always envisioned a career in the technical field of electronics repair, and I am proud to say I am now actively pursuing a path in TVET and also of becoming an entrepreneur in the business of electronics,” he said.

Shackleford recently received the Prime Minister’s Youth Award in the TVET category. “I was nominated by my institution based on my performance, leadership, and contributions in the field of TVET. My involvement in training, competitions, community-based projects, and mentorship activities helped support the nomination. It was humbling to know that my efforts were seen and valued,” he said.

Shackleford said he feels incredibly honoured and grateful. Winning this award, he said, is more than a personal achievement, as it represents the hopes of young people from rural communities who dare to dream big. It is also a validation of the importance of TVET in nation-building, he said.

“My motivation comes from a desire to uplift my family, give back to my community, and break generational barriers. I am driven by a vision of progress, not just for myself but for others who look up to me. I believe that success isn’t just about where you get to, but who you bring along the way,” he said.

Shackleford said he plans to use this platform to advocate for TVET and youth empowerment. “I will engage with schools, youth groups, and training institutions to share my journey, mentor others, and highlight the endless possibilities that come with dedication and skills training. I want others to see that your background does not limit your future,” he said.

His ultimate goal is to be a trustworthy and helpful guide, supporting people in learning, solving problems, and making informed decisions. “I aim to improve continually, stay grounded in truth, and make a positive difference in people’s lives wherever I can,” Shackleford said.
