Deliveryman to resume testimony in Maitland trial on Monday
The Kingston deliveryman hired by Constable Noel Maitland to remove a sofa from his apartment will continue his testimony on Monday after the trial was adjourned yesterday.
The witness was released early on Thursday and given Friday off to carry out his job. The court was told that the prosecution could not have another witness available during the interim.
Continuing his evidence from yesterday, the deliveryman told the court that he used his personal phone to record two of the conversations he had on his work phone with Maitland, who contacted him about picking up the settee he had removed from the policeman’s apartment and transported to a car wash.
He previously told the court that he used his work phone to record two of about four conversations with Maitland days after he dropped off the settee at a car wash in Half-Way Tree, St Andrew.
The witness said Maitland called him early in the morning, asking if he was going to pick up the sofa from the upholsterer. The deliveryman, who asked Maitland which upholstery he meant, said he later informed the policeman that the police had seized his truck. According to the witness, Maitland responded with surprise then reassured him that “the police were doing their job” and would return the vehicle, adding that “everyting would be okay”. It was on that day that he recorded two of the conversations.
CERTAIN OF RECORDINGS
However, during yesterday’s testimony, the witness stated that he was certain of the recordings because he had listened to them on his phone and replayed them for about four officers at CIB headquarters.
He told the court that he showed the recordings to the police because “some things wasn’t matching up”.
He said the officers replayed the voice recordings, which were transcribed and displayed on a screen. When it was completed, the transcription was printed, and he affixed his signature.
Maitland is currently on trial for the murder of his girlfriend, 24-year-old Donna-Lee Donaldson, a popular social media personality, swimwear entrepreneur, and customer service representative. Donaldson was reported missing on July 13, 2022, two days after she was last seen at Maitland’s New Kingston apartment.
Her mother previously testified that Maitland picked up Donaldson from her home on July 11. She last heard from her daughter the following morning and could not reach her afterwards.
