PNP’s Nekeisha Burchell still winner of St James Southern
Following Saturday’s official recount of ballots for the St James Southern constituency, the People’s National Party’s Nekeisha Burchell remains the winner of the seat.
Burchell received 6,483 votes—a 199-vote difference over the 6,284 received by the Jamaica Labour Party’s Homer Davis.
The preliminary count of ballots following Wednesday’s general election had Burchell claiming 6,483 votes to Davis’s 6,276.
Following the official count, Davis gained eight additional votes, while Burchell received no additional votes.
The count took place at the Cambridge Resource Centre in the community of Cambridge.
Burchell’s victory at the polls has made her the first woman Member of Parliament to represent St James Southern.
Davis won the seat for the JLP in the 2020 general election, defeating the PNP’s Dr Walton Small.
Small had campaigned to represent the PNP in the constituency following the departure of former Member of Parliament Derrick Kellier, who held the seat for the PNP for 31 years.
